CESOC, ECMWF, DWD and BMDV come together for the Half-time event of the STEP UP! fellowship program
The two years fellowship STEP-UP program started last year in January 2023 organized by DWD with close cooperation between ECMWF and CESOC with four fellows working in different research topics (read more about the topics). As the program is already half-way and to mark this milestone, the DWD organized a Half-time event at the buildings of the Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) in Bonn on Wednesday January 31, 2024.
The fellows, staff from ECMWF, CESOC, DWD, and BMDV came together to discuss the progress of the program during its first year. The representative of BMDV and ECMWF gave welcoming remarks and followed by an inspirational talk by a guest speaker Dr. Insa Thiele-Eich, a distinguished climate scientist and aspiring astronaut gave an inspirational speech about her career journey.
The spotlight then shifted to the fellows, who presented their research achievements, with great engaging discussions among the attendees. Two fellows will continue their research as a fulfillment of their PhD studies at the University of Cologne and Forschungszenturm Jülich.
At the end of the day, Dr. Maike Ahlgrimm (DWD) and Dr. Peter Dueben (ECMWF) enriched the event with their insightful talks on scientific research at the Hans-Ertel-Centre, DWD, and the digital revolution at ECMWF, respectively.
The event was an opportunity for networking among the different involved institutes and to set a strong base for the program’s second year as well as the second round that is planned to start next year.
