EXO-OCEANS

Searching and Characterizing Extraterrestrial Subsurface Oceans

©ESA

Artist impression of ESA’s future JUICE mission in the Jupiter system. Several of the icy moons in the outer solar system are expected to harbor subsurface oceans due to internal heating from tides or natural radioactivity.

The occurrence of liquid water is considered one of the few essential prerequisites for life – at least as we know it on Earth.

The aim of the ERC Advanced Grant EXO-OCEANS project is therefore to search and explore extraterrestrial oceans mainly within the moons in the outer solar system.

The project will search and constrain the oceans with innovative methods and techniques, specifically a combination of computer simulations and new telescope observations.

This project receives funding from the European Research Council (ERC), as an Advanced Grant, under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme Grant agreement No. 884711
