Job Alert for Early Career Scientists – The Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) STEP UP! Fellowship Programme enters its third round – opening the door to an intriguing opportunity at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts in Bonn.
This 2-year fellowship (starting January 2027) invites early career scientists to engage with some of the most relevant challenges in global numerical weather prediction and climate research – working side by side with leading experts at ECMWF and the Center for Earth System Observation and Computational Analysis.
What makes this opportunity stand out?
You will contribute to research topics such as:
- Next-generation subseasonal-to-seasonal forecasting using machine learning
- Improving convection through combined physical and machine learning approaches
- Global optimisation of ECMWF’s land surface model (ecLand)
- Quantifying observation impact across physical and machine learning-based forecasting systems
At the same time, a dedicated training programme supports your professional development throughout the fellowship.
Who should apply?
This programme is primarily aimed at Master’s graduates; also PhD candidates are explicitly encouraged to apply. Applications are open to candidates from ECMWF Member and Co-operating States.
