The recent workshop on Large-Scale Deep Learning for the Earth System, held on August 29-30, 2024, at the Universitätsclub Bonn, brought together 113 in-person and 115 online participants.
Organized by the Center for Earth System Observation and Computational Analysis (CESOC), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and with the support of the TRA Modelling at the University of Bonn, the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the University of Cologne, this event highlighted the role of AI in advancing climate science, focusing on topics like machine learning-based weather prediction and AI-based Earth system models.
The workshop featured a rich program divided into thematic sessions over two days, covering topics such as machine learning for Earth system science, AI-based model emulation, and applications of large-scale deep learning in climate predictions. It also facilitated engaging discussions over poster sessions that underscored the critical role of deep learning in advancing our understanding of the Earth’s complex systems. A dedicated session from leading weather centres included contributions from Canadian Meteorological Centre, DWD, Météo-France and NOAA. This workshop on its second run marked a significant step forward in leveraging AI for climate science.
