Atmospheric research for Canada and the problem of accurate error estimation
This talk is divided into two parts: The first part gives a general introduction to atmospheric research for Canada. Different challenges for atmospheric research are described which arise from the unique conditions in the country. It also includes a short overview of the Canadian environmental agency ‘Environment and Climate Change Canada’ (ECCC). Motivated by this general introduction, the second part introduces two different approaches which address the problem of accurate error estimation of atmospheric data. The first one is a statistical approach, which makes use of the increasing amount of overlapping data of any kind. The second one is a dynamical approach, which explicitly evolves error parameters of a prognostic model over time. The potentials and limitations of the two approaches are discussed in the context of data assimilation.
