From uncertainty quantification to connected radar networks, from the Fréchet distance to transformer efficiency – our AlgoEarth Kick-off Week (7-10 October 2026, University of Cologne) once again offered an excellent platform for exchange between Earth scientists and computer scientists, if one can draw that line so easily.

Across a series of inspiring talks, participants explored how algorithms and machine learning are reshaping our understanding of the Earth system. Sessions ranged from machine learning and forecast error dynamics to remote sensing of precipitation, time series analysis, and the complexity of algorithms.

The discussions were as lively as the evening activities, featuring a scenic boat tour on the Rhine and a guided walk through Cologne’s historic city center.

AlgoEarth is organised by the University of Cologne, in collaboration with partners from the University of Bonn, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and Forschungszentrum Jülich.
