NOAA’s rapid-refresh convective allowing models

“Convective allowing models, with horizontal grid spacings between 2 and 4 km, provide critical forecast guidance for a range of applications.  I will provide an overview of the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) modeling system, which is currently operational within the U.S. National Weather Service.  The HRRR is initialized hourly, and provides up to 48 h forecasts.  I’ll present details on the data assimilation approach, the model configuration and physics, and a range of verification statistics to illustrate the model’s performance.  I will also describe the Rapid Refresh Forecast System (RRFS), which is currently under development and will replace the HRRR in late 2024.” – David Turner
