SUMMARY:Zorah Lähner - Geometry for 3D Reconstruction & Physics Applications
DESCRIPTION:CESOC kindly invites you to a talk given by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Zorah Lähner\, from the Institute of Computer Science\, University of Bonn\, talking on their work \n“ Geometry for 3D Reconstruction & Physics Applications”\nDate:Wednesday\, 28 Jan. 2026\nTime: 15:00 (CET)\nLocation: Bonn and Online (TBC) \nIt is open to any interested person within the CESOC research disciplines (any Earth system sciences\, mathematics or computer science).\nPlease contact info[@]cesoc.net\, if you would like to participate. \n\nAbstract: \nI will introduce my groups research about geometric optimization in different fields of optimization ranging from 3D reconstruction to plasma flow in stellarators. The common theme in all topics is the importance of the geometric representation which is often essential for modeling specific properties or influencing convergence. For example\, the popular 3D Gaussian splatting representation used originally for novel-view synthesis is now also used for 3D reconstruction\, however\, the requirements for accurate texture and geometry representation are quite different so a direct extraction of the 3D geometry leads to artifacts. This talk will talk about how changes in the geometric representation can have effects on the final results (both in a positive and negative way).
