The field of computational science has become a major topic of large-scale research in recent decades due to the exponential growth in the performance of high performance computing and data systems. Methods of simulation science and big data analytics have become tools that significantly drive progress in many fields. Indeed, developments in supercomputing are opening up unprecedented dimensions of spatial and temporal resolution as well as complexity of the systems under investigation.
FZJ is a world leader in supercomputing, big data analytics, and increasingly in large-scale artificial intelligence. Here, the close involvement of users in the design process is an important development principle. This also applies to our next big step, the design, development and construction of the first European Exascale system at FZJ which is expected to be operational by the end of 2023. In my talk, I would like to not only present the existing resources at JSC but also outline the roadmap towards Exascale, focussing on the possibilities of the Jülich Modular Supercomputing concept.
